چکیده

Introduction: The UK FMD epidemic of 2001 was the largest the world had ever experienced (Rossides, 2002), resulting in the slaughter of over 4 million animals in support of the control strategy and a further 2.5 million on welfare grounds (Kitching et al 2005). Inevitably a tragedy on this scale ushers in an era of change.Impact analysis assesses the response in a time series to a discrete event or intervention input (Makridakis and Wheelright 1987). This article describes an approach to quantifying the impact of the outbreak on left displaced abomasum (LDA) and uterine torsion diagnoses made by NADIS, a network of 40 veterinary practices and 6 veterinary colleges monitoring diseases in cattle, sheep and pigs throughout the UK. Since its inception in Jan 1997 it has returned monthly counts of veterinary treatments for endemic disease. The object of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there had been no change in incidence or seasonality of LDA and uterine torsion from before the 2001 FMD outbreak to after.Materials and methods: The NADIS data from January 1997 to December 2007 was analysed, bracketing the 2001 UK FMD outbreak (19th February 2001 to 30th September 2001). During that period the population of dairy cows serviced by NADIS vets remained roughly stable at 100,000 cows (M.Howe, pers.comm.). A general model for a time series with a single intervention is given by the following formula:

Experimental induction of left abomasal displacement: a new educational technique

The purpose of this study was to induce abomasal displacement to the left, and to let the undergraduate and post graduate students get used to the ping sounds of abomasum and other clinical manifestations. The procedure was carried out on eight young bulls, they were sedated and a 2 m flexible tube was inserted through the nasal canal into the rumen. By laparo-rumenotomy, 20 cm of the tube was ...

Left abomasal displacement between the uterus and rumen during bovine twin pregnancy

Here, we describe two cases of left displaced abomasum (LDA) in Holstein cattle at 6 and 9 months of twin gestation. Clinical examination revealed signs of proximal ileus with marked abdominal distension, but no ping sounds. An unusually high position of the gravid uterine horn on the left side was bserved with ultrasound. Left exploratory laparotomy confirmed that the abomasum was displaced to...

Nutritional risk factors in the etiology of left displaced abomasum in dairy cows: a review.

The transition period occurring 2 wk prepartum through 2 to 4 wk postpartum is the major risk period in the etiology of left displaced abomasum. The prepartum depression of intake and the slow postpartum increase in intake are risk factors causing lower ruminal fill, reduced forage to concentrate ratio, and increased incidence of other postpartum disorders. Uncomplicated ketosis, retained place...

A farming perspective on the 2001 foot and mouth disease epidemic in the United Kingdom.

The outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) that occurred in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2001 was the single largest epidemic of FMD the world had ever experienced. This outbreak raises important issues about future FMD control strategies, including the use of vaccination. The outbreak has also stimulated a wider debate in the UK on the role and direction of agriculture. The author presents the...
